After months of studying, the last thing you want is to face unnecessary stress on exam day because of technical issues or an exam environment that doesn’t meet the requirements.
Below is a practical checklist that every EPE candidate should review before the exam.
1. Make Sure Your Internet Connection Is Stable
A reliable internet connection is essential. If your Wi-Fi is sometimes unstable, consider having a mobile hotspot available as a backup.
2. Use a Reliable Laptop
Use a laptop that is in good working condition. Generally, a laptop purchased within the last five years should be sufficient.
Avoid using:
- Very old laptops
- Devices with battery or charging issues
- Computers that frequently freeze or restart unexpectedly
3. Keep Your Laptop Plugged In
Do not rely solely on battery power, even if it is fully charged. Keep your charger connected throughout the exam.
4. Restart Your Laptop Before the Exam
Restart your computer about 30–60 minutes before the exam. This helps clear unnecessary background processes and reduces the chance of unexpected software issues.
5. Close Unnecessary Applications
Before launching the exam:
- Close email applications
- Close Microsoft Teams, Zoom, Slack, Discord, WhatsApp, etc.
- Close unnecessary browser tabs
- Disable pop-up notifications
This helps improve system performance and prevents distractions.
6. Complete the System Check Early
Do not wait until exam day to test your computer.
Complete all required compatibility and system checks several days in advance so you have enough time to resolve any technical issues.
7. Join Early
Log in at least 20–30 minutes before your scheduled exam time.
This gives you enough time for:
- Identity verification
- Room inspection
- Equipment checks
- Any unexpected technical troubleshooting
8. Prepare an Appropriate Exam Room
Choose a private room with a door that can be closed.
Avoid:
- Open living rooms
- Shared workspaces
- Areas where people may walk through
If the room does not meet the proctor’s requirements, you may be asked to move before the exam begins and that will add unnecessary stress.
9. Remove Visible Materials
Your workspace should be completely clear.
Remove or cover:
- Open bookshelves
- Open cupboards
- Study notes
- Books
- Printed materials
A clean testing environment helps avoid unnecessary questions from the proctor.
10. Know What Is Allowed on Your Desk
Generally, you should have only:
- A transparent water bottle
- Required medications (if applicable)
- Mobile phone (just for the first few mins, then they will ask you to switch off and keep it far from your exam table)
Do not keep:
- Blank paper
- Pens or pencils
- Books
- Notes
- Any other unnecessary personal items
Always follow the official exam instructions if they differ.
11. Keep Your Government-Issued Photo ID Ready
Have your identification within reach before the check-in process begins.
12. Avoid Interruptions
Inform your family members, roommates, or anyone else in your home that you must not be disturbed during the exam.
No one should enter the room while the exam is in progress.
13. Dress Appropriately
Avoid wearing:
- Smartwatches
- Headphones
- Earbuds
- Hats or caps (unless required for religious reasons or otherwise permitted)
Follow all instructions provided by the exam proctor.
14. Use the Washroom Before the Exam Starts
The EPE is a long examination. Take care of your personal needs before beginning so you can remain focused throughout the session. Even if you take washroom break, the clock does NOT stop, that’s within your exam time.
15. Stay Calm if Technical Issues Occur
If you experience a technical problem:
- Stay calm.
- Contact the proctor immediately.
- Follow the instructions provided.
Do not panic or attempt unauthorized troubleshooting that could interfere with the exam.
Final Thoughts
You have already invested countless hours preparing for the EPE. Don’t let avoidable technical problems or an unsuitable testing environment affect your performance.
Spend 20–30 minutes preparing your computer and exam room before exam day. A little preparation can save a lot of unnecessary stress.
The goal on exam day is simple: focus on answering questions—not solving technical problems.
Best of luck to every EPE candidate. I wish you all the very best for your examination!
